A $600 pledge and a challenge
Volunteer and supporter Charlie Hamlet pledged his tax rebate check to St. John Center.  And, he says, “I’d like some company in this endeavor.”

When he called to pledge his donation, he explained, “I would dearly love to spend the money on my hobby and buy a nifty new something for my computer.  But, there is so much need out there.”   He continued, “I would prefer my tax money go to some deserving government program.  But since they’re giving it back, I’ll send it to another deserving program, St. John Center.”

If you’d like to meet Charlie’s challenge, contact Maria at 568-6758.  And thank you, Charlie, for the inspiration!

St. John Center clients to benefit from recent HUD grant award

The Louisville Metro community of homeless service providers celebrated the December 2007 announcement of grant awards from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  In total, $6.1 million dollars will support local agencies that provide transitional shelter, permanent housing, and supportive services to over 10,000 homeless men, women and children each year.

St. John Center clients will benefit from the funding which should arrive in July.  Funds to support the agency’s housing case management program will allow St. John Center to assist another 18 chronically homeless men with rental support and case management.  The program successfully placed 25 men in housing in the last fourteen months, largely with the support of housing vouchers from the Kentucky Housing Corporation.  The HUD application was made in partnership with Phoenix Health Center and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Sr. Kathleen celebrates with Anthony who is off the streets and thriving in our Housing Case Management program.  The HUD award will allow St. John Center to help more men like Anthony find and keep affordable, permanent housing
