One day, 40 volunteers, gallons of paint, buckets of mulch, and fresh lumber can work wonders when GE Volunteers are spearheading the efforts. When chosen to be one of GE’s Spring Projects, St. John Center celebrated and made a long list of needs. With the help of a generous Share the Gold grant to pay for materials, the group replaced flooring, built shelving, converted the smoking room to office space, scraped and painted exterior fencing, poured a concrete pad for the dumpster, tore out old shrubs and laid mulch, and painted parts of the building’s interior. Dubbed the "extreme shelter makeover," the day was a tremendous success with benefits that will last long into the future. Additional thanks go to Papa John’s International, Home Depot, and Irving Materials Inc.
Before: A hole in the floor at the top of the stairs.
Cynthia and crew scraped rust from the fencing, some of which is over one hundred years old, before applying fresh paint.
