Please mark your calendar for Friday night, February 29th, for the Raisin’ the Rent party. The dance party will be held at the Mellwood Arts and Entertainment Center. If you’d like to join the planning committee, please contact Maria or Keith .
Rent Parties were made popular in Harlem in the 1920’s and ‘30’s. Friends would gather for games and dancing, charging a nominal fee at the door. Funds raised would be given to a neighbor in danger of being evicted due to his or her inability to pay the rent. This year, the Rent Party income will help defray costs associated with the transitional housing component of the Residential Recovery Program.
